A word about Barringer Cues:
At Barringer Cues, we want to clear something up right from the beginning. We are a cue builder who builds cues for players. We do not build $5000 or $10,000 magnificent show piece cues which rarely see a pool table. Our cues are built for people who want to play pool and want to play better. We are not into building highly decorated cues because whether the cue has 427 inlays or zero inlays it is 100% the same construction. If you want a cue to walk around and say hey, look at me then our cues are not for you. However, if you want a cue that plays well and will help you achieve maximum playability, then our cues are for you. It took us years to perfect our construction methods and we want people to enjoy what we have achieved in the area of hit and feel.
A word about G10 pins and resonance - It’s not just the pin!
We were the first to use Black rolled and molded G10 in our cues. Lately, there has been a trek by many cue builders to use the widely available 3/8” Black G10 pins which are being mass manufactured. These pins are by no stretch of the imagination similar to our 7/16” Black G10 pins. The 3/8” stock does not resonate nearly as well as the 7/16” stock which we use in our cues.
We also understand that mass manufactured black 7/16” G10 pins are now being produced so expect to see many Black 7/16” G10 pin cues available in the near future. They will not have that Barringer hit unless they put the time into perfecting the construction which allows the G10 pin to work at 100% maximum efficiency.
Additionally, our cues are known to resonate and hit far superior and many believe it is the G10 pin which does all the work. Nothing is further from the truth. The G10 pin is only a part of why our cues resonate and hit better than many others. You cannot build a cue and use a G10 pin in place of a metal pin and expect the G10 pin to give you that ‘WOW’ hit. The construction methods utilized as well as the internal components of each Barringer Cue and along with the G10 pin is what sets Barringer Cues apart from others. Make no mistake about it. Just adding a G10 pin is nothing more than a cue stick with a G10 pin. Our construction method which took us years of trial and error to perfect and along with the use of the G10 pin allows the cue to have a superior resonance. Unless you actually hit with one of our cues, it’s hard to understand.
A word about Barringer Shafts:
Joe's cues are offered with a Pro Growth Shafts™ which have straight grain and exceptionally tight growth ring count. These shafts are few and far between and offer, what Joe believes is the best hit attainable from any shaft. When you purchase a Barringer Cue, you are purchasing more than just a custom butt; you are purchasing a complete cue designed to work together, both butt and shaft. Joe is not a custom butt builder who then adds one of those aftermarket glued up pies or flat glued-up shafts. The Pro Growth Shaft™ works in harmony with the butt to produce the best resonating hit available. As with anything in life, if you're looking to play better, practice makes perfect. And, perfect practice will make you play better and perfect practicing with a great cue will assist you in achieving your goals. There is no magical cue or shaft which will make you play better.
A word about Weight & Balance:
We are offering this information because of the many requests we receive weekly about Barringer Cues and the specific weight of each cue. We’re tired of responding to each request so therefore we’ve written this little bit of info so you, the buyer may be more informed.
There are a lot of misconceptions, myths and stories about a cues weight and balance point. No matter who you talk to, the conversation will be geared to their personal likings, opinions or in many cases what a dealer may actually sell or have in stock. In some respects, a cue may be best because the dealer received a special discount so that cue is best for that month or until he sells out.
Cues come in various weights. With most all production type cues, the weight can be adjusted by adding or removing a weight bolt in the butt end of the cue. Some production type cues have various size weight bolts so the weight can be adjusted more easily to a customer’s satisfaction. A basic cue may be 18oz but by adding a 2oz weight bolt, it can easily accommodate a person who wants a 20oz cue. And, by the same token, a 1oz weight bolt can be used to accommodate a person who wants a 19oz cue and so on and so forth. If you want an 18 oz cue there will be a large hole where the weight bolt should be placed. This is all hardly precision cue building.
We believe, as do many other professional cue builders of today that while this does serve a purpose and satisfies the majority of cue buyers today – it’s a 'Walt Disney Production'; a sort of 'Mickey Mouse' method of achieving the end result to building a fine billiard instrument. Production cue makers need the ability to change weights on any given day to satisfy the buyer’s requirements. And, that’s why they are production cue makers; they satisfy the masses by supplying the demand.
The fact is that most cues which have a weight bolt always feel butt heavy. This is, in our opinion, a negative for precision play. You do not want to feel the weight of the cue distributed in the butt end. If you’re right handed, you don’t want to feel like you’re holding a lead weight and the weight bolt will give you precisely that feeling. In fact, it can and will throw your game off.
Additionally, the weight bolt placed in the butt section of any cue will most certainly deaden the hit of that cue (thud!). This is not a made up story and is not written to deter you from purchasing cues with weight bolts but it’s a fact. A weight bolt deadens the hit of a cue (thud! again). While the majority of players don’t know or realize this, they are not yet at a level of play where it will make much difference so life goes on. Then, there are those players who are so good that they can play with a broom stick, so weight bolts don’t matter to them. But for the rest of us, we need all the help we can get. And, a properly built and balanced cue will feel wonderful in your hands.
Barringer Cues are not weight adjustable and do not have weight bolts. The weight of all Barringer Cues is built right into the cue and evenly dispersed throughout the cue. That’s one reason why a 19oz Barringer Cue does not feel the same in your hands as a 19oz cue with a weight bolt. It’s an amazing difference and feel you notice immediately. Additionally, due primarily to Joe's construction techniques and lack of a weight bolt, that all Barringer Cues Resonate like few others. A cue is suppose to act like a tuning fork and all Barringer Cues Resonate similar to the way that a tuning fork does. It’s a hit and feel that you’ll come to appreciate as you advance in your skill level.
Some people like the weight and feel of a cue with a weight bolt because many players have become programmed by Madison Avenue. Some cue manufacturers have the resources to advertise their wares and can sell just about anything to players. They market their cues, which in many instances, are manufactured overseas using inferior woods and not allowing their woods to stabilize. For lack of doing this, they state other things which are just not true to sell their wares and shortcomings to the American public. Proof of this are recent recalls and the wood of their cues shrinking or swelling when subjected to various climates throughout this country. Many of these production outfits are 'predators' upon the American marketplace. These 'predator' style cue manufacturers don't even manufacture cues or their own shafts; they are merely marketing firms which market hyped-up products with glossy brochures.
Bottom-line: whether you purchase a Barringer Cue or any true custom cue, you’re supporting American families and purchasing precision and craftsmanship. And, that precision and craftsmanship is backed by the cue builder. Most importantly, you won’t have a broom stick and /or lead weight type feel as most custom builders truly build fine hitting billiard instruments. American custom cue builders are not cranking them out for maximum profits to support Madison Avenue advertising and large overseas facilities. In fact, some so-called cue "manufacturers" have morhped into marketing firms today and don't even build cues any more!
All Barringer Cues are made from the finest domestic and exotic woods.
A word about Domestic & Exotic Woods:
Joe imports all his exotic woods in huge quantities. His Red Ivory, Ebony and African Blackwood come directly to him from Africa. His Amboyna Burl comes directly to him from Laos. His Cocobolo comes directly to him from Nicaragua and Costa Rica. So on and so on. He brings in thousands of boards and sticks and selects only the finest woods for his cues.
A word about Shaft wood:
Joe has the same sources of supply for many years for his shaft wood which comes from the upper peninsula of Michigan and Canada. He brings in hard, straight grained maple and cuts and dowels all his own shafts. His shafts have been hanging for many years. He stocks well over 4,000 shafts for his custom cues. Joe does not believe that any other custom cue maker stocks as much shaft wood and in actuality, no one does. Shaft wood is the heart of a cue and having the quantity to draw upon allows him to use the finest. And, each shaft has tight growth rings which Joe believes is essential to a great hitting shaft. Joe has the best when it comes to tight ringed shafts; no one even comes close.
A word about Construction:
Joe feels that owners of his cues should know about his construction methods. When you are paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a cue, he feels you should know how your cue is constructed. The wood for each Barringer Cue is aged and stabilized for years prior to going into production. His method of construction allows Joe to evenly balance each cue without the use of a weight bolt. The joint pin or screw is either a 3/8-11 brass, stainless or titanium or a 7/16-11 genuine rolled and molded black G10 - a Barringer exclusive. Most of his shafts are produced with a Melamine ferrule and Moori tip. Joe does not cut any corners. Only the finest materials for each cue. Whether you purchase a cue for $500 or $2500, they are constructed the very same way.
